Inverters versus Reverse-Cycle Air Conditioners

The inverter system found on newer air conditioners signifies the ability of the unit to continuously regulate its thermal power flow by altering the speed of the compressor in response to cooling demand. They tend to be very efficient at part load operation, which is a more common mode in a typical household. So if you are likely to use an air conditioner for long periods because you live in a hot climate, it may be worth considering an inverter system.

Traditional reverse-cycle air conditioners use a heat pump that is either working at maximum capability or switched off, as the compressor's speed cannot be varied. In order to regulate temperature a thermistor is used to measure the ambient air temperature and switch the compressor on when the ambient air temperature falls outside the desired temperature range.
